4 out of 5 stars Nice reel - takes some time to adjust to it..   July 6, 2010

I bought this reel at Bass Pro Shops. I also have a ABU Revo S ($130). The Winch is a better-built reel than the S.. it's smoother and more solid feeling. I also fish Shimano Curado reels and they too are a very good reel and I think the REVO line is comparable and offer more options (price-wise).

One thing, I should note, is that the REVO Winch (no pun intended) is a slow ratio reel (5.4.1) and it takes some time to get used to it. If you are used to faster reels (6.4.1. or 6.1.1, or 7.1.1), then this thing is a slow-poke. Case in point- a 20 yard cast will take you nearly 1/3 longer to reel back to the boat (no joke). This translates to 5-10 seconds more reeling per cast. I recommend using this reel for slow presentation only (jig, worm, frog, large cranks in the depths). It will annoy you trying to reel fast for any other strategy. So, the Winch will suit winter, or early spring fishing for Bass, and slow rolling large spinnerbaits, or perhaps whatever your favorite slow summer strategy is. I suppose you can crank with this reel, but again, I would only use it for deep running crank baits which are tiresome to fish (this reel would shine there and make the day a bit more tolerable). The handle is larger too and noticably larger than my REVO S, and Curados. So, the Winch, it just takes some getting used to.

The reel seems to be built well (with no plastics on the housing etc.), however, the "made in China" tag has yet to prove itself to be a really good, or bad thing. The brakes and drag on this thing are awesome and it will not give under heavy strain. This reel is, as advertised - for heavy duty, and slow fishing. the only thing I don't love about this reel, is it's appearance.. For a $200 reel, it should look cooler than it is.. It just looks OK to me.. The "Winch" logo looks like an 80's air-brush artist threw it on there. Also, the reel is made up of too many different colors (Blue, silver, gold, grey, black - so it really doesn't look all that great and doesn't match up).. So, the REVO Winch.. .it may not look that handsome on your rod. But, it still looks like it's a quality piece based on the metals, contruction and sturdy feel. The only other miss on this reel is the spool.. (no drilled holes to string your line through???) -not sure why this doesn't have that at this price point.. (a miss there).. I will likely get a REVO STX for another ROD for cranking purposes.

At the end of the day, you might think that I don't like this reel as much as the 4 stars I gave it, but I will likely grow on this reel as much as it does me. It's made to function well, and does so with a ton of power. Despite a few small misses, this is a great reel!

5 out of 5 stars Abu Garcia Revo Winch....Wonderful Winch...   February 26, 2010

Received the Winch one fishing trip ago. Used on fresh water lake for bass.

First impression was that though like the STX and the top of the line Premier, all of which have the same 11 bearings, the Winch was more free running.

They all share the same centrifigal braking system to avoid back lashes, but the STX and Premier also have magnetic brakes for use when throwing into a cross or head wind. Even with the magnetic set to Zero, it may be that there is still an influence on the freedom of the spool.

The Winch also has the longer handle, like the Skeet Reese model, and some of the salt water reels.....it hauls line beautifully with no fatigue.

Super product at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.
